Coast at Portpatrick

Scenic Galloway is secluded, friendly and unexploited and above all can be toured on uncrowded roads with easy & free parking. This part of Scotland is reminiscent of a bygone age free of today's bustle where life revolves at a slower pace. Enjoy walking in the Galloway hills (Merrick 2786ft) or marked forest trails. Take the Southern Upland Way or venture into the wilds for total peace and solitude. Maps and information are provided in the houses or on request. The proximity of the gulf stream allows the area to enjoy a mild climate year round with very little snow. Plants flourish and pleasant days can be spent visiting some of the area's famous gardens such as Threave, Logan Botanic and Castle Kennedy gardens. The coast is varied with spectacular cliffs, coves, beaches and caves. Long peninsula's, islands and bays are there to be explored and will help make a memorable holiday, particularly for the children. You are constantly reminded of the past in Galloway. Ancient stone circles, some of Britain's first Christian sites from the simple St Ninians cave to the Whithorn Excavations. Well preserved Castles along the coast and spectacular Culzean and Drumlanrig castles. Pleasant unspoilt fishing villages such as Portpatrick, Isle of Whithorn, Kippford and Rockcliffe are waiting to be explored. Brightly painted and whitewashed cottages, scattered across this patchwork of rolling hills, coast and mountains provide the tourist with endless contrasts. Galloway's old Market towns are attractions in themselves. Newton Stewart, Glenluce, Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, Castle Douglas and others provide ample shops, entertainment and good restaurants. Try a day trip to Ireland from Stranraer. Shortest crossing point (90 mins.. on Seacat ).
